HOPE FOR CHANGE

SALIH EBRAHIM ANJABA
he Eritrean democratic Alliance is passing through a rough road and the dream of creating a healthy environment to build a solid democracy is fading gradually.
The debate among opposition parties overheating .The forecast is looking gloomy, especially after the withdrawal of EPDP from National Conference for democratic Change.
This situation in the Twenty-first Century, took me back to the stage of the fifties of last Century, where the conflict intensified between the Eritrean parties, and reached to the point of assassinations instead of concerted effort to realize the dream, we were unsolicited to a achieve Independence which was at our hand because of that the Eritrean people fought thirty years and paid major sacrifices.
In the phase of the struggle, the Eritrean revolution divided to several organizations, and the conflict was bitter and hostile. It reached to the point EPLF allied with Wayne to expel the ELF from scene. Now the opposition is passing through the same footsteps.
As an observer of events. The Eritrean landscape of politics indicates poor visibility in the horizon because opposition was divided in two teams compete to score power, and deviated away from the central issue Of removing the Dictator, restore order, and democracy were forgotten. If we want to diagnose the current situation .The opposition is entrenched in the moat of their own advantages, and not serving the common interest of ordinary Eritrean people by trying to bridge the gap.
This is the starting point and we have to put the record straight to explain the dilemma, and reality in order to reach a result benefits us all.
As non-partisan I want point out some of the issues that led to culminate the overheated debate between the parties and led to a very sad end. Thus we couldn’t accomplish the desired objectives and go on to sit and negotiate to implement the atmosphere of understanding. The difficulties began to take place, when the EPDP attended the Brussels conference, and the Solidarity, and other parties were not invited. This indicates the weakness of the composition of the Coalition, and credibility of the union under the umbrella of Eritrean Democratic Alliance. The Eritreans who care about our beloved country have the right to express their dismay and concern. We were having high hope to correct the mistakes occurred, and resulted from Brussels Conference when NCDC was proclaimed to discuss vital issues of our unity, and tackle problems facing Eritrea’s Future.
The press release of The EPDP to withdraw from the NCDC decreased the potentiality of fruitful discussion. The opposition is divided in to two major camps refusing to compromise and the rest of us don’t know where will take us this kind of political climate?
How long is going to take to clean this mess? I think the essence of this division is power, control, and greed or may be under Table goals known by the parties’ leaders.
The withdrew of EPDP from the NCDC is not accepted with all due respect for the reasons declared in the press release, because the NCDC is simply a dialogue forum and if you delve in to the meaning is just An open discussion or, an honest debate To achieve democracy and everlasting Peace in Eritrea.
The forum will a achieve three goals:
1- To establish Common ground of understanding
The reasons of disagreeing.
2- Analyze the depth of our dilemma, and find solutions.
3- To establish a transitional Government in exile.
4- To build strong coalition to accelerate the fall of the exclusionist gang of Asmara.
This dialogue forum is the first step which will follow other steps to find remedy to our problems, and obstacles facing our future democracy, and unity.
The EPDP should participate, and sit with all parties. Pretexts are not excuses to hinder the long process, to reach maximum goals, and should make a greater efforts to save the country.
We respect the EPDP party, and its contribution is Fundamental to establish a healthy environment for our future democracy.
I don’t think the forum of NCDC will have effective result without EPDP.
The second aspect is the solidarity party and its allies which are struggling to defend the rights and grievances caused, by the dictator and dummies surrounding him.
Solidarity party came in to conflict sharply with EPDP after Brussels Conference, and doing the best to discredit its cadres through media and political bickering instead of working to bridge the gap that widening day after day. In my opinion
Disregarding the withdrawal of EPDP is not a positive move, and to hold the democratic Dialogue forum without the presence of EPDP is not going to have strong reverberation. We demand other parties to exert many efforts to attract the EPDP and reach fruitful debate.
I hope the major players to put in consideration other minorities and parties rights as elements to build the future of the country. I am really worried the same democracy will not be a tool to suppress others and deny their rights.
We are one of African Nations who entered in to the Democratic experiment, since the middle of the last century. I am really sad and concerned to arrive at a dead end in the construction of our country’s democratic dream. We sacrificed and paid heavy price .Enough is enough, it is time for reconciliation, prosperity, and democracy.
We don’t want to fail. We can make a change if we are genuine and serious. I conclude my article by mentioning the bellow saying to remind my fellow Eritreans still we can create a very new and different atmosphere to cultivate the seeds of hope for a brighter future.
You were not born a winner, and you were not born a loser. You are what you make yourself be.
Lou Holtz
